This time, the hapless, homeless and quasi-criminal Hershele - Yiddish literature's tragicomic schlemiel turned Robin Hood - relies onstinky socks, boiled chickens, and the kindness of strangers to fill his belly and his pockets.

This tale - woven from those my mother and aunts remembered after Auschwitz - is heavily peppered with my own attempts to fill in the blanks. My mother and aunts revealed only the punchlines of my grandmother's stories and their own, through laughter and tears.
