On a cold winter night in the heart of Moscow, a secret meeting took place in a dimly lit room. It was a gathering of some of the most powerful and influential individuals in the country. The atmosphere was thick with tension as the fate of the nation hung in the balance.

At the center of the room stood Lidiya Petrova, an enigmatic and respected figure within the government. She was known for her unwavering dedication to the party and for her vast knowledge of state secrets. Petrova held the key to a set of classified documents that could potentially change the course of history.

These documents, now famously known as "The Lidiya Petrova Papers," contained evidence of corruption at the highest levels of government. They exposed secret alliances, illegal activities, and an intricate web of deceit woven by those who were supposed to protect and serve the people.

The Power of the Lidiya Petrova Papers

The Lidiya Petrova Papers were a ticking time bomb, threatening to expose the darkest secrets of the ruling elite. They were a testament to the bravery of one woman who dared to challenge the system and risk her own life for the greater good. Petrova knew that the moment these documents were made public, her days would be numbered.

For years, Petrova had carefully collected the evidence, documenting every transaction, every secret meeting, and every act of betrayal. The depth and scope of the corruption she uncovered were staggering, implicating even those who were believed to be untouchable.

The Lidiya Petrova Papers had the potential to shake the foundations of power, to dismantle a regime built on lies and manipulation. But as word of their existence spread, the stakes grew higher, and forces within the government closed in on Petrova. They were determined to silence her, to ensure that her revelations never saw the light of day.

A Race Against Time

Petrova knew she was being hunted. Her every move was monitored, her every communication intercepted. But she refused to back down. She was prepared to sacrifice everything to expose the truth and bring justice to a nation drowning in corruption.

As the world watched with bated breath, Petrova's allies rallied around her. Journalists, activists, and ordinary citizens united in their support for this brave woman. They knew that her voice could spark a revolution, that her sacrifice could inspire others to rise up against the oppressive regime.

The race was on to protect the Lidiya Petrova Papers and to ensure that Petrova's story reached the world. Every step was a battle against time, against a powerful enemy that would stop at nothing to prevent the truth from being revealed.

The Legacy of Lidiya Petrova

In the end, Petrova paid the ultimate price for her bravery. She was found dead in her apartment, but not before she had managed to send the Lidiya Petrova Papers to a trusted contact. Her sacrifice was not in vain.

As news of Petrova's death spread, the world erupted in outrage. Protests and demonstrations filled the streets of Moscow and beyond. The people demanded justice, they demanded answers. Petrova had become a symbol of hope, of resistance against a corrupt regime.

The Lidiya Petrova Papers were eventually made public, exposing the true extent of the government's deceit. The fallout was immense, leading to the downfall of powerful individuals and a complete restructuring of the political landscape.

Remembering the Heroine

Today, Lidiya Petrova is remembered as a hero. Her courage in the face of insurmountable odds, her unwavering dedication to the truth, and her sacrifice for the greater good will never be forgotten.

The Lidiya Petrova Papers serve as a reminder of the power of one individual to make a difference. They stand as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the strength of those willing to fight for justice.

The legacy of Lidiya Petrova lives on, inspiring new generations to stand up against corruption and to fight for what is right. The world owes a debt of gratitude to this worthy comrade who dared to take on an entire regime and ultimately paid the price with her life.

PARENTAL GUIDANCE

A young lieutenant in the Soviet Air Defence Force reports to his first Interceptor Regiment and attends the regimental dance. He meets a pretty redhead. When he asks to walk her home, he discovers he has been dancing with his Commanding Officer’s daughter. Soon training as a Weapons Systems office on the revolutionary new Mig-31 is interspersed with romantic evenings with his new girlfriend.

In Sevastopol, Admiral Mikhail Petrov takes over as C-in-C of the Black Sea fleet. He learns at first hand of some of the problems he will face, but soon has a crisis as an unexploded mine is found in the fleet anchorage. Twenty-five years before when he was a young submarine officer, the then C-in-C was dismissed after a mine sank one of his ships, so it is a worrying time for the admiral.

At the KGB headquarters at the Lubyanka, senior KGB officers duel with their Western rivals and with one another. A major intelligence operation to harm the West is under way, but details are kept tantalisingly secret.

A junior naval rating, Lidiya has endured more than 24 hours on the Moscow-Sevastopol train. As the train skirts the fleet anchorage at Sevastopol, she sees the ships that she will exchange radio messages with as soon as she starts work. An idealistic teenager, Lidiya is a dreamer at heart and her parents are worried at how impractical she is.

In the luxurious dacha of a senior Soviet officer, a ruthless plot to assassinate the aged General Secretary of the Soviet Union, Leonid Brezhnev, begins to take shape. A new hard-line regime will replace the stagnant Brezhnev clique, but one of the plotters has a skeleton in the closet.

That skeleton, when it is uncovered, puts the head of the external intelligence arm of the KGB on to the plotters but details are too fragmentary to permit any action. In Sevastopol, a newly wed militsia (civil police) officer flirts with his wife of a few weeks as they watch the fleet put to sea.

He too will play a part in the tragedy that is about to unfold. The plotters make their move to assassinate Brezhnev, but will it be in Moscow, or in the State dacha at Oreanda just outside Yalta. Fearing that the plot is now well advanced, KGB General Georgi Ivanov, a decorated war hero is dispatched with a hand picked team to protect the General Secretary.

A nail-biting air battle is the prelude to land and sea actions in which the plotters are often able to deceive loyal Soviet units into doing their bidding. With forces loyal to the Soviet Union on both sides, courage and tragedy walk hand-in-hand. As the story evolves we discover where the Air Defense Force officers fit in, and what happens to Admiral Petrov and his elite Naval Infantry. Lidiya finds herself at the centre of affairs and General Ivanov, although turned sixty, faces combat once again.

As the pace quickens, NATO becomes increasingly concerned, as Soviet naval and air operations could constitute a move against Turkey, one of the weakest partners in NATO. As NATO units go on alert to face down such plans, Group Soviet Forces in Germany fear a NATO attack on the USSR may be imminent. What had been a coup has now achieved a global dimension and may even trigger World War III.

Author Robert Hendry has studied the Soviet military for many years. He is familiar with much of the hardware that is deployed in this novel and has even seen live firings of missiles. He was present when a mine was removed from the Fleet Anchorage !

With a Russian wife, the Soviet characters he has depicted are not cardboard cutouts, but real people. They keep their spirits up with Soviet eras humour. Join Admiral Petrov, General Ivanov, Lidiya, and the rest of the cast as action erupts in the Crimea on land, on sea and in the air.

“To Kill Our Worthy Comrade” introduces 19-year-old Lidiya for the first time.
