Knitting Your Tinsel Sloth: Step-by-Step Guide
Now let's get down to the exciting part – knitting your very own Tinsel Sloth! Follow these step-by-step instructions to bring this cute and cuddly creature to life:
Step 1: Gather your materials
First, gather all the materials you will need for this project. You will need:
- King Cole Tinsel Chunky yarn (choose your favorite festive color)
- A pair of knitting needles (size 4mm)
- Scissors
- A tapestry needle
- A pair of safety eyes
- Polyester stuffing
- Stitch markers (optional)
Step 2: Start with the body
Begin by casting on 20 stitches using the long tail cast-on method. Make sure to leave a long tail for sewing up the body later. Knit in stocking stitch (knit one row, purl one row) until the body measures approximately 30cm in length. Remember to leave a long tail when cutting the yarn.
Step 3: Shape the head and limbs
To create the sloth's head, shape the knitting by decreasing stitches evenly across a row until you have 10 stitches left. Knit these 10 stitches for approximately 10 rows to form the head's height. To shape the limbs, divide the remaining stitches evenly and knit them separately using the same stocking stitch pattern. Leave long tails when cutting the yarn for sewing later.
Step 4: Sew the body and limbs together
Using the long tails left from each piece, sew the head and limbs to the body using the tapestry needle. Make sure to position them in a way that brings your Tinsel Sloth to life! Don't forget to stuff the body with polyester stuffing before sewing it completely shut.
Step 5: Add the final touches
To give your Tinsel Sloth some personality, attach the safety eyes using the washers provided. You can also embroider a cute smile using a contrasting colored yarn. And voila! Your Tinsel Sloth is now complete and ready to bring joy to your holiday season.

King Cole Tinsel Chunky yarn is a fabulous and keenly priced shaggy yarn that creates gorgeous looking toys.
This adorable sloth is 29cm/11.5in long. It has movable ‘yarn joints’ which are easy to work and explained in the pattern, so you can position him in a number of ways.
The sloth is knitted using just a single ball of King Cole Tinsel Chunky in shade Latte 1860. You will also need a small amount of standard chunky/bulky yarn in cream for the face and small amounts of DK/light worsted yarn in black and grey for the nose and the eye surrounds.
As well as the yarn, you’ll need a pair of single-pointed needles in size 5mm/US8 and size 3.25mm/US3. You’ll also need a pair of 10mm black plastic toy eyes and some stuffing.
The pattern is quite straightforward and suitable for adventurous beginners and upwards. The yarn takes a little getting used to but I include some handy tips in the pattern and, unlike some textured yarn, it is actually very easy to undo if you make a mistake.
You are welcome to sell the items you make from this pattern in small amounts at craft fairs or fundraisers – you do not need to ask for special permission but please credit me where possible.
