4 days ago I left my partner of 9 years.

I left him in our three quarters finished house with everything we built up together. With our minds, money and our very own hands. God, we put a lot of work into that place. But what good is a beautiful house when there is no happiness in it? Or at least, no peace, or safety? I felt - feel- like I was left with no other choice. Either be bold or carry on the way it was for the rest of my life. Or commit suicide. I won’t lie, I considered every option in detail than I had ever thought I could do. But I finally realised there is life in me still.

The reason I had to leave was that I was in a coercive, abusive relationship. He controlled everything. Everything. My finances, what I ate, where I went, who I saw. Everything I did was criticised. Everything I did was wrong. Every advice I followed, including his own, was contradicted.

I want to share my story and all the different things happening in my mind as I went through years of abuse, knowingly. I want to share it so that I can move on. I want to share it so that others can recognise that, though abuse happens more than it ought to - it is not normal. My biggest wish is that this document can help myself and others like me take back control of their own lives.

There are going to be horrible things in this document. I am not going to hide any of it so be warned. This is not a very nice story. There will be things in here that are hard to read. But maybe, just maybe, it can help someone.
